Heiko Ryll is an artist whose passion vets his work. His youth was spent dreaming of being a performer - someone who loses themselves in their craft every night. But aging has changed Heiko’s intention behind his artistry - maybe it isn’t performance or praise he needs, but rather a feeling of transformation. By cutting his teeth on Graphic and Web Design, with over twenty years of experience, it was photography that gave Heiko the opportunity to combine performance and purpose. Performance is unique in its moments, offering gratification of emotion and feeling.
It has been Heiko’s study of Caravaggio, the Italian Baroque painter, that has shaped much of his artistic process. Caravaggio’s painting techniques regarding Tenebrism and Chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark to heighten dramatic effect) have been the crux of Heiko’s distinct style, where originality and homage intersect. And photographing live performances in music, dance, and theatre is not just simply documenting the show, but rather finding the microcosms in performances, giving different light, angles, or stories behind the obvious. It’s about giving the viewer another experience contrary to the usual.
Heiko is constantly pushing himself to challenge his own creativity. Be it fashion, hair photography, or such, it’s about being himself and letting life and spontaneity inspire the visual nature of his work. Mistakes are welcomed and patience is key. In the studio, where he photographs hair and fashion, his disposition has garnered Heiko appraisal from top brands in the hair industry like Revlon Professional, Wella International, Sebastian International and American crew. His work led him to photographing finalist collections at the Contessa Awards for the past three years.
As society grows, so does technology; therefore, mastering the art of tradition is key to integration and expansion for a contemporary audience. Heiko knows that art is understanding our past, and creating now, to change our future.
